Frequently Asked Questions
Spaced repetition is a learning technique that schedules reviews at increasing intervals. When you answer a card correctly, you'll see it less frequently. When you struggle with a card, you'll see it more often. MedFlash uses the SM-2 algorithm, the same system used by millions of medical students worldwide. This approach is scientifically proven to move information into long-term memory more efficiently than traditional studying - essential for board exams!
Again: You forgot the answer or got it wrong. The card will be shown again soon.
Hard: You remembered but it was difficult. The interval will increase slightly.
Good: You remembered correctly with normal effort. Standard interval increase.
Easy: You recalled instantly with no hesitation. Larger interval increase.
Be honest with your ratings! Accurate self-assessment is key to effective board prep.
We recommend starting with 20-30 new cards per day for dedicated study periods. During clinical rotations, 10-15 new cards is more realistic. You can adjust this in Settings. Remember: consistency beats intensity. It's better to study 20 minutes daily than to cram for hours once a week. Many students who scored 250+ on Step 1 credit daily spaced repetition.
Yes! Tap the + button in any deck to add your own cards, or create entirely new decks. You can add questions, answers, explanations, hints, and tags. Creating your own cards from First Aid, Pathoma, or lecture material is a great way to reinforce learning - the act of formulating questions helps encode information in your memory.

Study Tips for Medical Students
Study Daily
Even 15-20 minutes daily is more effective than long sessions once a week. Build the habit early in M1!
Be Honest
Rate cards honestly. Clicking "Good" when you struggled hurts your board prep in the long run.
Read Explanations
Don't skip the explanations! Understanding pathophysiology helps you remember better than rote memorization.
Make Your Own
Create cards from First Aid, Pathoma, and lecture slides. The act of creating reinforces learning.
Use During Rotations
The Watch app is perfect for quick reviews between patients. Every minute counts during M3!
Keep Your Streak
Use the streak feature as motivation. Students with longer streaks consistently score higher on boards.
